Booking KTX for the First Time: A Practical Korea Train Guide

Leer en español

For your first KTX booking, confirm the stations before comparing trains, then check that a ticket was actually issued after payment. A city name, a search result and a card approval are three different things. The useful end point is a valid ticket with the correct date, stations, train and passenger details.

Use the official Korail English reservation page for a direct booking. This guide follows the ordinary ticket process; a KORAIL PASS is a separate product, not a compulsory first step.

Information checked October 15, 2026. Korail’s current English guide and reservation screen state a sales window of up to two months, replacing older advice about one month. Actual timetables, special travel periods and remaining seats still depend on your search.

Start with the correct stations

StageCheckCommon mistake to avoid
Before searchingDeparture and arrival stations against your mapAssuming every train for a city uses the same station
Before payingDate, departure time, train type and passengersChoosing a similar-looking result without checking details
After paymentIssued ticket, car and seat where assignedTreating a bank message as the boarding ticket

Korail’s station list includes Seoul, Yongsan and Cheongnyangni as distinct choices. It also distinguishes names such as Daegu and Dongdaegu. Search for the station that fits your route, not just the first familiar city name. Check the local journey between the station and your accommodation at both ends. Official station search

Choose the date and passenger count before comparing departures. Check that the result is the train type you want. A different departure station or transfer can change the convenience of the trip even when the final city is the same.

When and where can you buy?

The current Ticketing Guide states that sales open at 07:00 two months before departure. Use the actual search for your date rather than assuming a train must appear because the usual sales window has begun; special transport periods and timetable changes can affect availability. If booking from abroad, account for the difference from Korea’s local time. Official Ticketing Guide

Published purchase channels include Korail’s website, the KORAIL+ app, ticket machines and railway stations. An ordinary subway station is not automatically a KTX sales point. Choose the official channel you can use confidently rather than assuming every app has identical language and payment functions.

What should you check about seats?

Read the options shown for your actual train. Do not rely on a universal “best seat number”: train layouts, direction and available places can differ. If sitting together is important, check the assigned places before treating the booking as complete.

This guide has not tested every seat-selection screen or payment route. It therefore does not promise that every foreign-language channel lets you choose any seat on a map. What matters is the car and seat recorded on the issued ticket, where applicable, and whether they meet your needs.

For large luggage, think about carrying and storing it before choosing the journey. The current English carry-on page permits up to two items you can carry yourself, without occupying seats or obstructing aisles. Do not interpret the absence of a general suitcase-size figure on that page as unlimited baggage permission. Official carry-on guidance

How do you know payment produced a ticket?

Korail provides credit-card payment and has FAQ guidance for overseas-card refunds, but that does not guarantee that every foreign card will authorise successfully. Follow the current payment instructions and then open MY TICKET to check the issued journey. MY TICKET

Keep the booking email and password exactly as entered, including upper and lower case. They are needed to retrieve the reservation. Confirm the travel date, stations, departure time, train number and car or seat details, and keep the valid ticket available for travel.

If payment appears to fail, check MY TICKET and the card’s transaction record before trying again. That helps avoid buying twice while an earlier attempt is unresolved. Contact official customer support or a railway ticket office if the result is unclear. Korail FAQ

What if you need to cancel?

Before departure, use MY TICKET for cancellation or refund. After departure, the published guidance directs passengers to a station ticket office; a refund cannot be requested after the arrival time printed on the ticket. Fees vary with timing and the applicable day or product, so check the current terms for your ticket instead of assuming every cancellation is free.

For overseas-card refunds, Korail’s FAQ says processing may take two weeks to one month, with the exact timing depending on the card issuer’s cycle. A cancellation confirmation is not a promise that the money will appear immediately. Card-paid tickets are not refunded in cash. Current refund FAQ

What should you do at the station?

Arrive with time to find the departure board, correct platform and car position. Use the train number and time on your ticket, not only the destination. Platform information can change, so follow the station display.

Have a valid ticket before boarding and keep your bags clear of aisles. With the station, ticket and return journey understood, the first KTX trip becomes a straightforward transport choice rather than a test of how quickly you can navigate a booking screen.
