Makgeolli and Jeon: A First-Time Ordering Guide

Leer en español

For a first order of makgeolli and jeon, choose the food, check the drink’s alcohol percentage and ask what size the serving is. You do not need to order a bottle per person, and you can ask whether food is available without alcohol. A few menu words are more useful than trying to follow a complicated drinking ritual.

Makgeolli (막걸리) is a cloudy fermented alcoholic drink. Jeon (전) refers to pan-fried dishes that can use vegetables, seafood, meat or other ingredients. KTO presents seafood-and-green-onion jeon and potato jeon as examples alongside traditional drinks, but the recipe and portions depend on the venue. KTO traditional-drink route

Information checked October 12, 2026. This guide explains menu terms and ordering choices. Current prices, minimum orders and opening hours need checking with the restaurant you choose.

What should you know about the drink?

KTO describes makgeolli made through fermentation with rice and nuruk, a fermentation starter. Other products use ingredients such as wheat. Sweetness, texture, carbonation and alcohol content are not identical across the category. KTO introduction to makgeolli, regional product examples

Do not treat every milky-looking bottle as the same low-strength drink. Ask 도수가 몇 퍼센트예요? — “What is the alcohol percentage?” — or read the label. The name makgeolli alone does not give the answer.

If you want a smaller serving, ask 잔으로도 주문할 수 있나요?: “Can I order it by the glass?” Not every establishment offers that option. Follow the product or staff instructions for opening and pouring, especially with carbonated products; do not shake a bottle vigorously just because you have seen someone mix a different one.

What do the menu units mean?

Korean wordMeaningWhat to clarify
병 / 잔Bottle / glassVolume, price and whether individual glasses are sold
주전자Kettle or serving potHow much it contains and which product is served
접시 / 인분Plate / portionSize and how the restaurant expects it to be ordered

These units do not establish a universal amount of drink or number of diners. Ask about the actual serving rather than assuming one plate feeds a particular group size.

If you decide to order a bottle, 막걸리 한 병 주세요 means “One bottle of makgeolli, please.” Use it because you want that serving, not as a default order for each person.

Which jeon should you choose?

Haemul pajeon (해물파전) is seafood-and-green-onion jeon. Seafood ingredients can include shrimp and squid. Kimchijeon (김치전) uses kimchi, and KTO’s recipe description includes flour and egg with possible pork or squid additions. The word kimchi does not establish that the dish is vegetarian. Gamjajeon (감자전) is a potato option mentioned in KTO’s traditional-drink route. Ask how the restaurant prepares it rather than assuming the name means potato is the only ingredient. Other jeon can be made from fish, meat or vegetables coated with flour and egg. KTO explanation of jeon

For a straightforward food order, say 해물파전 하나 주세요: “One seafood and green-onion pancake, please.” Before ordering more, ask 이 전은 몇 명이 나눠 먹기 좋은가요?: “How many people can share this jeon?” That lets the staff explain their actual portion.

What about allergies and food preferences?

Check the ingredients, dipping sauce and shared cooking equipment with staff if you have an allergy. Wheat, egg and seafood are relevant questions for many preparations, but the recipe in front of you is what matters. A vegetable or kimchi name does not guarantee vegetarian or gluten-free food.

If you prefer not to drink, ask 술 없이 음식만 주문해도 되나요?: “Can I order food without alcohol?” The answer may depend on the business, so check before sitting down or placing an order. Drinking is optional; choosing the food does not oblige you to finish a bottle or match another person’s pace.

How can you make the meal straightforward?

Start by asking 메뉴 좀 보여 주세요: “Please show me the menu.” Compare the dish, serving size and drink label, then choose an amount your group actually wants. Ask which accompaniments are included before adding extras.

Plan the journey home before drinking and do not drive afterward. If you are curious about the food pairing, you can keep the visit focused on a shared plate and conversation rather than treating drinking as the main task. Clear choices about ingredients and portions make the first order easier.
