What does Hangeul Day celebrate?
Hangeul is a writing system; Korean is a language. King Sejong created the script in 1443. In 1446, its explanatory work, Hunminjeongeum, was completed and the script was proclaimed. October 9 is the modern commemorative date, not a precisely established day in 1443 when the script was invented. Historical records do not establish an exact completion and proclamation date. Thus, 2026 marks 580 years from the 1446 proclamation and 100 years from the first modern commemoration. It does not mean that Hangeul itself is only 100 years old.
Is the National Hangeul Museum open?
Its main building is currently closed. The official website says all spaces are affected by construction for expanded facilities and educational spaces. You can still encounter the museum’s work through an exhibition hosted elsewhere. FROM 1926 TO INFINITY is officially announced for October 2, 2026–February 9, 2027, in the third-floor thematic exhibition space of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. King Sejong Story (세종이야기) is beneath Gwanghwamun Square, with an entrance behind the King Sejong statue. The official directions describe access from Gwanghwamun Station, Line 5, with several exit options. Use the venue’s entrance map rather than assuming the main Sejong Center building entrance is the exhibition entrance. The statue entrance should not be assumed to be step-free; check the appropriate access route if you need one.
Its Hanyang (하냥) exhibition combines Hangeul calligraphy with materials including lacquer, mother-of-pearl and hemp cloth. This is an exhibition, not an advertised drop-in lettering class. The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History (대한민국역사박물관) is at 198 Sejong-daero. General admission is free. Its ordinary Friday closing time is 18:00, earlier than King Sejong Story’s current Friday extension. An evening-only plan could therefore miss the Hangeul exhibition hosted there. King Sejong Story normally closes on Mondays. If Monday is a public holiday, it opens that Monday and closes on the first following weekday instead. How could you arrange the afternoon?
For an earlier start, try the King Sejong statue → King Sejong Story → the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. Allow about 2–3 hours as a planning estimate, with more time if you like reading exhibition texts. That allowance is not an official visit duration or a guarantee about queues.
If you start later, consider the history museum first because it closes earlier under the published Friday rules, then return to King Sejong Story. Can you try writing Hangeul without booking a class?
A simple personal activity is to copy a word into your own notebook and look for its letters on signs. 한글 consists of two syllable blocks: 한 = ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ, and 글 = ㄱ + ㅡ + ㄹ. Letters combine into blocks rather than appearing only as a continuous line of separate symbols. Learning that pattern is a starting point, not instant fluency in Korean. The closed National Hangeul Museum should not be treated as an available museum-shop stop.
